Magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 Quakes Hit Caracas

Two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck west of Caracas on Wednesday night, causing widespread damage and building collapses. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the death toll could range between 10,000 and 100,000.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and said the quakes affected several states. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reported that buildings and homes had collapsed.

Authorities reported at least 32 dead and 700 injured. The earthquakes, among the strongest in Venezuela in over a century, were felt as far as the Brazilian Amazon, 1,700 kilometers away.

U.S. President Donald Trump offered aid and described the situation as 'massive in scale'.
