Venezuela Quakes Leave 1,450 Dead

The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has risen to at least 1,450, acting President Delcy Rodríguez reported on Saturday. More than 3,200 people were injured and nearly 50,000 remain missing, according to a website promoted by the political opposition.

The quakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, devastated the coastal state of La Guaira and parts of Caracas, leaving over 3,100 people homeless. Rescue teams from more than a dozen countries, including Argentina, El Salvador, and the United States, have deployed to the area.

Over the weekend, rescuers pulled 33 people alive from the rubble, including a father and his son. However, time is running out for the thousands of missing, as aftershocks continue.

The humanitarian crisis is compounded by the precarious political and economic situation the country already faced.
